Although I’ve numbered this as question #5 here, I remember this actually being the very first question of the advice corner.

And what a way to start.

Right from question number one, Haneul was faced with a slightly awkward “I’m hopelessly in love with Haneul” type of question. 😂

I just hope her boyfriend never finds out about this question LOL.

By casually adding 저를 위해서 — “for my sake” — he gently acknowledged the fan’s feelings without taking things too far.

And somehow, that just makes him even more charming.

I think there is something particularly satisfying about the way Haneul talks, including the process that led to this answer.

It’s not simply that he is good at talking.

There is something refreshing about the fact that he doesn’t try too hard to look cool or come up with some polished, “perfect” answer.

Instead, he seems willing to honestly show what he is thinking in the moment:

“Okay… I really shouldn’t say the wrong thing here.”

And then he actually says that out loud.

Haneul has often shown that he has a firm determination not to get involved in 논란 during his career in the entertainment industry.

So I found it particularly interesting that this word came out so naturally in this situation.

He doesn’t try to look cool.

He doesn’t go along too far with the fan’s feelings.

But he doesn’t coldly shut her down, either.

And on top of that, he is willing to show us his little “Oh no, this is a difficult one…” moment before giving his answer.

There is a certain ease and confidence in that.

💡 Mini Korean Lesson: What exactly does 논란 mean?

I definitely wasn’t expecting the word 논란 to appear in the very first answer of Haneul’s Advice Corner, so this part of the conversation really stuck with me.

논란 is a word you see all the time in Korean entertainment news. However, it can be surprisingly difficult to translate into English or Japanese with just one word.

Even during the fan meeting, I felt that the interpreter was briefly being careful about which expression to choose (into Japanese).

So what exactly did Haneul mean by 논란?

What does 논란 actually mean?

The Korean word 논란 (論難) literally has a rather formal feel to it. The word is made up of Chinese characters associated with argument/debate and difficulty/criticism.

In actual modern Korean, however, 논란 is used much more broadly.

A simple way to understand it is:

A situation in which something becomes the subject of public discussion, criticism, disagreement, or controversy.

The exact English word depends heavily on the context.

🎤 So what did Haneul mean here?

Haneul said:

지금 잘못 말하면 논란이 될 것 같아요.
“If I say the wrong thing here, this could become 논란.”

The official interpretation at the fan meeting used “issue（in Japanese).”

I found that choice quite interesting.

“Issue” is not as strong as “scandal,” and it doesn’t necessarily imply the kind of intense online backlash suggested by “backlash” or “flaming.”

It captures the feeling of:

“If I answer this badly, this could become a thing.”

And honestly, that fits the situation very well.

He was jokingly recognizing that this is a dangerous question for a celebrity to answer carelessly.

And then I had another completely unrelated thought.

The interpreter got to listen to Haneul’s live voice through the headset throughout the entire fan meeting.

If I were the interpreter, I think I would have melted💗

Listening to that voice right in my ears for the whole fan meeting…
