Kang Haneul’s Advice Corner #1 | How Can I Keep Smiling Like You?

❤️Deep Dive|깊이

Learn Korean Through Kang Haneul | “Laughter Should Always Be Close to You.”

On July 25, 2026, Kang Haneul successfully held his fifth fan meeting, “ALWAYS Season 3.”

Both Haneul and MC ORI mentioned that Haneul had spent a great deal of time redesigning the program. He wanted to create as many opportunities as possible to interact directly with fans, so he kept revising the schedule over and over until he was satisfied.

One of those interaction segments was “Haneul’s Advice Corner.”

It was filled with thoughtful, heartfelt answers, so I’d like to share what I remember.

(Recording was not allowed, so these are based on my memory.)

Questions from Fans

  1. How can I smile all the time like you? ← Today’s topic 💙
  2. How can I learn to enjoy spicy food?
  3. Final consonants (batchim) are so difficult when learning Korean.
  4. I’m this cute, so why don’t I have a boyfriend?
  5. I have a boyfriend, but I still want to marry you. How can I make my boyfriend my number one?
  6. Should I pursue the job I love or choose a stable, ordinary career?
  7. I’m this cute, but I still got rejected… (I can’t quite remember the rest!)
  8. I’m raising a son. How can I raise him to become someone like you? What did your parents teach you?
  9. Do you have any travel memories? (Asked in English by a fan from Germany.)
  10. I came with my older sister, but we don’t get along. She stole my Kang Haneul hand fan!
  11. How can I become friends with someone I’ve just met?

There may have been a few more, but these are the ones I remember.

Fan Question #1“How can I always smile like you?”

This was the answer that stayed with me the most.

Haneul simply said:

웃음이 가까워야 돼요.
Laughter should always be close to you.

He then explained what he meant.

If smiles are always close to you—

even if your smile feels awkward at first,

it will gradually become natural.

And when a natural smile becomes part of your everyday life,

it grows into a truly beautiful smile.

Clementine’s Note 🍊

I feel this is a philosophy that came naturally to Haneul.

The advice segment was almost entirely improvised. Unless someone has reflected on life quite deeply, I don’t think they could express thoughts like these so effortlessly.

That’s one of Haneul’s greatest charms.

One moment he’ll give a playful, unexpected answer that makes everyone laugh.

The next, he’ll respond with sincerity, warmth, and surprising depth.

Throughout the fan meeting, there were many moments when his words felt genuinely comforting.

Words that quietly settle into your heart.

웃음이 가까워야 돼요.

I think I’ll keep those words close to my heart, too.

💙 Korean One-Point Lesson

Vocabulary

  • 웃음 — laughter; smile
  • 가깝다 — to be close; to be near

Grammar

-아/어야 되다

This grammar pattern literally means “must,” “have to,” or “should.”

Here:

  • 가깝다 (to be close)
  • 가까워야 되다 (should be close)

So the sentence literally means:

“Laughter must be close.”

However, that’s not quite the feeling Haneul intended.

A more natural translation is:

“It’s important to keep laughter close to you.”
“Keep smiles close in your everyday life.”

In Korean, -아/어야 되다 isn’t always a strict command or obligation. It is also commonly used as gentle advice—suggesting that something is desirable or worth doing.

That’s exactly how Haneul used it here: not as an order, but as warm encouragement.
