Where this expression comes from
On Korean X , you’ll often come across posts that begin with 뜬금없는데… (“This is random, but…”).
I decided to join the trend myself.
He was picking out lighting fixtures.
I thought it might be uncomfortable if I approached him directly, but I still wanted him to know I was a fan. So I pretended to be talking to my friend and said,
“Out of all the actors in the world, you’re already the brightest one. You don’t even need to buy a light.”
Then, all of a sudden, Haneul replied from behind me,
“Thank you so much.”
…I was apparently having a conversation with empty air.
At first glance, it sounds like a story about accidentally meeting your favorite celebrity.
But as you keep reading, it gradually turns into an impossible situation, ending with a punchline that makes you laugh.
This copypasta-style internet meme has become popular across Korean social media.
These days, people simply replace Kang Haneul with the name of another actor, idol, or celebrity, making it a familiar template in Korean fan communities.
What expressions are used?
① 뜬금없는데
뜬금없다 means “to be out of the blue,” “random,” or “to come out of nowhere.”
On social media, it’s commonly used to introduce a sudden change of topic.

It has the feeling of:

② 본 적 있음 vs. 봄
There are two common openings to this meme.
용산에서 강하늘 본 적 있음.
“I’ve seen Kang Haneul in Yongsan before.”
or
요도바시 카메라에서 강하늘 봄.
“Saw Kang Haneul at Yodobashi Camera.”
본 적 있음 literally means “have the experience of seeing”, so it talks about a past experience.
봄, on the other hand, is the casual online past tense of 보다 (“to see”). It’s an abbreviated, SNS-style way of saying: ”Saw him!”
