Where This Expression Appeared
On August 26, 2026, at the press screening for the film 아가미 (Gill), Kang Haneul talked about taking on voice acting for the first time.
Haneul plays 강하 (Kangha), a character who gradually begins to change after meeting 곤 (Gon). After seeing the finished film, Haneul expressed his gratitude to the director and animation team with these words:
정말 숟가락만 얹은 그런 기분인데…
I really feel like I just put my spoon on the table…
With a touch of humor, he gave the credit to the production team, saying that he had simply focused on the voice acting while they had created everything else.
What Does It Mean to “Just Put Your Spoon on the Table”? 🥄
The literal meaning of 숟가락만 얹다 is “to just put down one’s spoon.”
- 숟가락: spoon
- -만: only / just
- 얹다: to put / place on top (pronounced [언따] eon-tta)
In the polite 해요 form, it becomes 얹어요 ([언저요] eon-jeo-yo).
Imagine a table where a complete feast has already been prepared, and all you do is show up with your spoon. From this image, the expression came to mean joining in after other people have done most of the work, or sharing in the credit for something that is already complete.
Depending on the context, it can also sound critical.
다 준비했는데 민수는 숟가락만 얹었어요.
We prepared everything, and Minsu just joined in once it was all done.
On the other hand, when you use it about yourself, it can be a modest way of saying, “I hardly did anything.”
저는 숟가락만 얹었어요. 다 여러분 덕분이에요.
I only played a small part. It’s all thanks to you.
That is how Haneul is using the expression here—as a form of humility, giving the credit to the production team. 🥄
얹다: “to put on top” / “to place”
얹다 is a verb meaning to place or set something on top of something else. It often gives the image of gently putting something on top.
For example, 밥 위에 계란을 얹다 means “to put an egg on top of rice.”
It is pronounced 얹다 [언따] and 얹어요 [언저요].
밥 위에 계란을 얹었어요.
I put an egg on top of the rice.
머리 위에 모자를 얹었어요.
I put a hat on my head.
빵 위에 치즈를 얹어 주세요.
Please put some cheese on top of the bread.
So the basic image is that of placing something lightly on top of something else.
That same image is used figuratively in the expression we saw today: 숟가락을 얹다, literally “to put one’s spoon on the table.”
It describes joining in after other people have already done most of the work—in other words, doing very little yourself but still taking part in the finished result or sharing in the credit.

When asked how he felt about his first major voice-acting role, Haneul made everyone laugh by saying that this might have been the project he had “put the least effort into.”
Of course, he was being modest. He understands just how much work goes into creating an animated film, so what he meant was that he had only stepped in at the very end and contributed his voice.
He said that he had simply followed the director’s instructions and expressed through his voice what the director wanted to convey—that he himself had not really done anything—and gave all the credit to the director and production team.
Even when saying, “I didn’t really do much,” Haneul somehow finds a stylish way to put it.
