Today, I’d like to share an episode from when Ha-neul appeared on the nationally beloved talk show You Quiz on the Block.
When host Yoo Jae-suk prompted him by saying,
“I hear there’s something your mother used to tell you all the time…,”
Ha-neul instantly turned bright red and burst out laughing—“Hahaha—!🤣🤣”—clearly overwhelmed with embarrassment.
So, what kind of words did his mother teach him?

진짜 옛날이에요. 진짜 옛날에 어머니가 진짜 그 얘기 진짜 자주 하셨어요.
It was really a long time ago. Back then, my mom really, really used to say that all the time.
항상 제가 뭐 머리를 뭐 자르고 오거나 이제 뭐 중학교 때쯤인가? 저도 머리에 좀 관심이 많잖아요.
Whenever I came home after getting my hair cut, or, you know, around middle school maybe? I was pretty into hairstyles too.”

At the time, shaggy cuts were everywhere. I’d come home with, like, a full-on shaggy haircut.

💡 Key Point! The Warm, At-Home Korean of the Ha-neul Family
In the way Ha-neul speaks, you can really feel both his shyness and his approachability.
1. Repeating “진짜 (jinjja)” over and over
Ha-neul keeps repeating “진짜” (“really”).
Rather than simply emphasizing facts, it’s more like saying,
“Well—really, you know, honestly!”
It’s a very natural, spoken expression that shows how vividly those memories are coming back to him.
2. “-단 말이에요” (“It was like that, you see”)
He uses this when explaining his own actions.
Instead of just saying “It was popular,” it adds a nuance like,
“It was popular back then, you know,”
as if he wants the listener to truly understand the situation at the time.
It softens the statement and gently appeals to the listener.
3. His mother’s “좀 (jom)”
Originally, “좀” means “a little,”
but in his mother’s line, it works more like
“Come on!” or “Please!”

Imagining teenage Ha-neul coming home with a trendy shaggy haircut is just too adorable. Honestly… I kind of want to be his mom. 💕
His mother kept telling him, “Be like Cha In-pyo,” and I’m sure it wasn’t only about looks. She probably hoped her son would grow up to be someone who is sincere and dignified on the inside as well—not just clean-cut on the outside.
When Ha-neul was still an ordinary high school freshman, he appeared on Achim Madang—a nationally loved TV show, something like a Korean version of an amateur singing contest. Back then, young Ha-neul casually said on air, “My mom is incredibly beautiful.”
I mean… what kind of good deeds must his parents have accumulated in a past life for a teenage boy—right in the middle of puberty—to praise his mother so openly in front of everyone?
