What’s the context?
For Kang Haneul’s fan meeting on July 25, fans were asked to wear sky blue. At the same time, the dress code also included somehow a funny notice:
“Please refrain from wearing anything that emits light.”
When I saw it, I posted this joke on X in Korean.
하늘: 제가 본체 발광인데 어떡하죠? 아 맞다 눈빛도 발광기능 있는데✨
Haneul: But I’m already glowing by myself… what should I do? Oh right—I forgot my eyes have a built-in light function too.✨
This joke combines two things:
- 자체 발광 (“self-glowing”), a popular Korean expression used to describe someone who shines naturally.
- A Babitalk advertisement that had recently become popular among fans because Haneul looked as if he was shooting laser beams from his eyes (눈빛, literally “eye light”).
So the idea is that Kang Haneul is basically a glowing light source.
Let’s learn three useful Korean expressions that fans often use:
- 빛나다 (to shine)
- 눈빛 (eyes / gaze)
- 빛내다 (to make something shine)
① 빛나다 (binnada) = to shine
This is today’s key expression.
빛나다 doesn’t only mean that the sun or stars shine.
It is also used when someone’s beauty, talent, acting, or charm stands out.
Examples
하늘씨는 오늘도 빛나요.
Haneul is shining today, too.
무대에서 하늘씨가 가장 빛났어요.
Haneul shined the brightest on stage.
You’ll often see expressions like these in Korean entertainment news:
- 빛나는 연기 🌟
brilliant acting - 빛나는 외모 ✨
stunning looks - 빛나는 배우 💎

② 눈빛 (nunbit) = eyes, gaze, the look in someone’s eyes
눈빛 is made from:
- 눈 = eye
- 빛 = light
Literally it means “the light of the eyes.”
In everyday Korean, however, it usually means:
- gaze
- look
- expressive eyes
- intensity in someone’s eyes
Common expressions
눈빛이 좋다.
Someone has expressive, powerful eyes.
눈빛 연기
Acting through one’s eyes.
눈빛만으로 압도하다.
To overwhelm others with nothing but your gaze.
When talking about actors in Korea, 눈빛 is one of the most common compliments.
③ 빛내다 (bitnaeda) = to make something shine
This looks similar to 빛나다, but it’s a transitive verb.
It means “to make something shine” or “to add brilliance to something.”
Examples
무대를 빛내다.
To light up the stage.
강하늘이 축가를 부르며 결혼식을 빛냈다.
Kang Haneul sang a wedding song and made the ceremony even more special.

Being a fan is practically synonymous with sparkle. So when you want to describe your favorite celebrity as someone who shines, 빛나다 is the perfect word.
As for Kang Haneul, he somehow managed to become a hot topic twice in almost the same period—first because of the “laser-beam eyes” in the Babitalk ad, and then because his fan meeting dress code politely asked fans not to wear anything that emits light. Somehow, he always ends up making people laugh without even trying. He really does seem to embody 빛나다💎
